Grading
Each of the 6 classes are given a numerical score from 1 from 7. These scores are determined by a combination of Internal Assessments (IA) and External Assessments (EA). Internal Assessments are projects that students work on throughout the two years and are graded by teachers. The due dates for IAs can be found in the handbook. External Assessments are exams taken in May of year 2 (with the exception of Art) and are graded by IB. Descriptions of the IAs and EAs for each of the classes Walden offers can be found below.
The total scaled marks possible from IAs and EAs for each class add to 100 marks. The IB then takes all the IA and EA scores from all IB schools in the world and publishes grade boundaries for every class. The numerical scores (1 to 7) are determined based on the score a student receives within those grade boundaries.
TOK and EE are each given a letter grade from A to E. These two grades are then converted to a numerical grade for IB core. CAS is graded based on participation. The numerical scores are added for a total IB score. The maximum score possible is 45 points, 42 points from classes, and 3 points from the core. An IB diploma is awarded to students who earn 24 total points from IB classes and core.
Examples of student scores in each class and details of how grades are calculated can be found in the handbook.
